How we research and review

Clear about how we reach a conclusion.

Advice should make it clear whether a product was used firsthand or researched through published information. We use different labels for those two things.

Research comparison

A comparison of official product documentation, features and requirements. It does not establish how well software performs on your photographs. Our current restoration comparison is in this category.

What a hands-on test would include

Before using this label, we will record the product version, date, device, settings and input photographs. We will publish comparable outputs, explain any adjustments and describe failures as well as improvements. Our current articles are researched guidance; we do not currently claim a hands-on product test.

A fair restoration comparison

  • Use the same unedited source files in both tools.
  • Keep each original and exported result separate.
  • Compare full images and close detail at the same viewing size.
  • Check whether facial features and expressions changed.
  • Record processing steps and any cloud-upload requirements.
  • Explain who each method suits instead of inventing a universal winner.

Commercial independence

Commission rates will not determine our conclusions. Free options and products without referral programmes can still be included.
