Google Takeout can make a downloadable copy of your Google Photos data. Choose Photos deliberately, request one export and keep every part together. Downloading does not remove the photos from Google.
This guide finishes when your requested download parts are saved and listed. They still need to be opened and checked before you rely on them as a backup.
What you need
Your own computer, your Google Account sign-in, a reliable connection and space for the downloaded ZIP files plus their extracted contents. A ZIP is a package that holds other files. You will unpack it later to reach the photographs.
1. Write down what you want
Make a short note: “A dated copy of my Google Photos collection, including videos and family descriptions.” If only one album matters today, say so.
Use an account and destination you control. Avoid putting private family material on a shared work computer or in a folder that other people can open.
Check available storage before requesting a large collection. The download and unpacked copies may need to exist at the same time. If space is uncertain, choose a small available selection for a trial or arrange space first.
Avoid reorganising or deleting photos during the export. This gives you a clearer collection to compare with the result.
2. Select Google Photos
Open Google Takeout and sign in. Check the account shown is the one containing your photographs.
Clear the selected products you do not need, then select Google Photos. Check any available included-data control and record the selection you actually make. Options can depend on the product and account; do not assume the export title proves everything is included.
Select Next step. Pause here and check that you are requesting photographs, rather than unintentionally including your email and other Google data.
3. Choose one downloadable export
Choose Send download link via email, a one-time export and ZIP as the file type. These choices keep this exercise to a downloadable set on your computer.
Choose a maximum archive size you can comfortably download. That is the size of each package, not a limit on the whole collection. A larger collection can arrive in several parts.
Select Create export. Note the request date and choices. Preparation can take time; you do not need to keep making requests because nothing appears immediately.
4. Download and list every part
When notified that the export is ready, return to Takeout through your account and find the matching request. Download every part of that set.
Use a clearly named folder, such as “Google Photos requested 2026-09-09”. Keep the original part filenames. Beside them, make a note listing each filename and whether the browser reports that its download finished.
Do not mark the set complete if one part is missing or failed. Keep a replacement attempt separate until you can tell which download is usable.
Google’s download links expire, so act while the request is available. If it has expired, request a fresh export; expiry of the download link does not mean your source photos disappeared.
Check your result
Compare the parts offered by Takeout with your list and saved files. You should be able to account for each expected part and identify any unfinished download.
This confirms receipt, not the condition of every photo. Avoid deleting the Google collection, cancelling storage or importing the whole export into another app at this point.
If the selected album or account was wrong, label this attempt clearly and request the correct scope. If preparation overlaps recent changes, note those changes for your later check: they may not be included.
Next step
Open and check your Takeout files in Windows. Keep the downloaded packages until you understand the result and have checked an additional copy.
