Crop the finger out if it is close enough to the edge, or use a healing/clone tool to paint it out with texture copied from the surrounding scene if cropping would cut off too much.
What you need
- The photo with the finger in shot
- Google Photos, Apple Photos, or Photoshop Elements
- 5 to 15 minutes
Try cropping first
Check first whether simply cropping in slightly removes the finger without cutting off anything important — this is by far the easiest fix, and it is always worth trying before reaching for a healing or clone tool.
How to remove the finger or thumb
- Open the photo and check whether the finger sits close enough to one edge that a small crop would remove it entirely without cutting into the main subject.
- If cropping works, use your app’s crop tool to trim that edge in just enough to remove the finger, then check the photo still looks reasonably balanced.
- If cropping would cut off too much, or the finger is further into the frame, switch to a healing tool instead — Photoshop Elements’ Spot Healing Brush, or Google Photos/Apple Photos’ equivalent touch-up tool.
- Paint directly over the finger with the healing tool — it will blend nearby texture (like sky, ground or wall) into the area automatically.
- Zoom in and check the edges of the repair for smudging, and clean up any rough patches with a smaller brush size.
- Save the result under a new file name.
Check the area blends in
Zoom in on the repaired corner and check for a visible outline, smudge or repeated pattern. Zoom back out to normal viewing size too — small imperfections up close are often invisible at the size a photo is normally viewed.
If the mark covers something important
If healing leaves an obvious smudge because the finger covered a detailed area (like part of a face or an object), try the Clone Stamp tool instead for more manual control over exactly which area gets copied where. If nothing looks convincing, cropping — even a slightly tighter crop than you would ideally like — is often the safer, more reliable fix.
Next step
Even out a badly cropped scan from a photo-scanning service covers cropping issues from the other direction, when a scan has been cropped too tightly by someone else.
