Use a healing or clone tool to paint over the date stamp with texture copied from a clean, similar-looking area nearby, blending it into the rest of the photo.
What you need
- The photo with the date stamp, saved as a copy
- Photoshop Elements (Clone Stamp or Spot Healing Brush) or a phone app with a similar object-removal tool
- 15 to 25 minutes, more if the stamp sits over a detailed area
When this works best
Removing a date stamp usually works best when it sits over a fairly plain area, like sky, pavement or a wall. A stamp sitting across someone’s face or a detailed object is much harder to fix convincingly, and it is worth deciding in advance whether the mark actually bothers you enough to risk it.
How to remove the date stamp
- Open your copy of the photo and zoom in on the date stamp so you can see it clearly.
- In Photoshop Elements, choose the Clone Stamp tool, then hold Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) and click on a clean area near the stamp that has similar colour and texture — this sets your source point.
- Release Alt/Option, then paint directly over the date stamp — Elements copies texture from your chosen source point onto the stamp area as you paint.
- Move your source point every so often as you go, so you are not repeating an obvious pattern, and reduce your brush size for the edges of the stamp.
- If the area is fairly plain, the Spot Healing Brush can work even more simply — just click and drag over the stamp and Elements blends it automatically.
- On a phone, Google Photos’ Magic Eraser or a similar object-removal tool can be pointed at the stamp directly — mark the area and let it fill in automatically, then check the result.
Check the area blends in
Zoom in to 100% and look for a visible seam, repeated pattern, or smudge where the stamp used to be. Zoom back out to normal size, too — small imperfections that are visible up close often disappear at normal viewing size.
If the stamp crosses a face or detail
If the area looks smudged or patterned, undo and try a smaller brush with more, shorter strokes rather than one long drag. If the stamp sits over a detailed area like a face, it may be safer to leave it — treat it as part of the photo’s history rather than risking a visible repair.

Repair a torn corner in a family photo covers a similar clone-and-heal approach for physical damage instead.
