You can practise getting photos back from Time Machine using a small test folder, while leaving your Photos library untouched.
This checks ordinary photo files. It does not prove that an entire Photos library, its albums or all its originals can be recovered.
What you need
A Mac with Time Machine already backing up to a connected drive, a few photos available in Photos, and space for two small copies. These instructions follow Apple’s current Mac guidance, checked in September 2026.
Keep your original library and its backup. The only folder you rename in this exercise is the new test folder you create below.
1. Make a small sample folder
Open Finder from the Dock. Choose Go > Home, then open Pictures. Choose File > New Folder and name it Photo recovery practice.
Open Photos. Hold Command while clicking two or three familiar pictures and a short video. Choose File > Export > Export Unmodified Original. The command may include the number of selected items.
Keep the original filenames. Click Export, choose your new Photo recovery practice folder in Pictures, then Export Originals. Wait until the files have finished appearing.
This creates copies outside Photos. It does not remove your library’s originals. An unmodified original does not include later editing; a Live Photo exports a still file and a video file. Keep both together.
Open the sample files in Finder first, so you know what the recovered copies should look like. Close them afterwards.
2. Back up the sample
Check that Pictures and the new folder are not excluded in System Settings > General > Time Machine > Options.
From the Time Machine menu near the clock, choose Back Up Now. Leave the drive connected until the backup finishes. Write down that completed time; it must be later than creating the sample folder.
If the menu is missing, use Time Machine settings to inspect progress and wait for the next scheduled backup. Do not continue while this run is incomplete.
3. Give the current sample a different name
In Finder, open Pictures. Click Photo recovery practice once, press Return, and rename it Photo recovery practice – kept copy. Press Return again.
Rename only this disposable sample folder, not your Photos library or original photo folders. The renamed sample remains available for comparison. Nothing needs deleting.
Pictures should no longer contain a folder with the exact name Photo recovery practice. That leaves its old location available for the restored copy.
4. Recover the backed-up folder
Leave the Pictures window open. Press Command + Space, type Time Machine, and open the Time Machine app from the search results.
Use the arrows or date timeline to choose the completed backup you recorded. Find the folder named Photo recovery practice, select it, then click Restore.
Time Machine returns items to their original location. For this exercise, that is Pictures. If you are asked to replace existing files, cancel and recheck the folder names before trying again.
Wait for recovery to finish. Keep the backup drive connected throughout.
5. Open the recovered files
In Finder, open Pictures > Photo recovery practice, without the “kept copy” suffix. Double-click each recovered photo and check it matches the sample you exported.
Play the recovered video and move towards its end. Compare the recovered folder with the kept copy if anything looks different.
Write down the backup date, the files checked and any problem. Keep both sample folders until you are satisfied with the result.
Check it worked
The recovered folder exists under its original test name, its photos open, and its video plays. Your Photos library and kept sample were not replaced.
This establishes a recovery result for these sample files only. It is useful evidence, without promising that every item in the larger collection is protected.
If you get stuck
The sample is missing: select a backup made after the export and before the rename. Check exclusions if it is still absent.
An original will not export: resolve its local availability before the trial. A cloud thumbnail alone is not a full file.
The result differs from an edited picture: unmodified export keeps the imported original. That difference is expected; library recovery is a separate matter.
Next step
Keep your Mac photo backup up to date.

Researched on 9 September 2026. This is a proposed small-file exercise based on Apple’s documented controls; I have not run it as a hands-on test for this guide.
Apple: export originals. Restore Time Machine items. Rename a folder. Time Machine setup and completed backups.
