If you suspect a backup has been silently failing, check the most recent date it actually backed up something, rather than trusting that it’s switched on — a backup can look active while quietly not having uploaded anything for months.
What you need
- The device and account in question
- A rough idea of when you last took photos you’d expect to see backed up
Why backup failures are often silent
Backup failures are often silent: a full storage quota, an expired password, or a lapsed subscription can all quietly stop uploads without an obvious ongoing alert on the device itself.
How to check whether backup is working
- Check the most recent backed-up photo’s date. Open the backup app or website and find the most recent photo it shows. Compare that date to when you actually last took photos on the device.
- Look for a specific ‘last backed up’ or ‘backup complete’ status. Most services show this in their settings menu (for example, Google Photos’ Backup settings screen) rather than just a generic on/off toggle.
- Check storage isn’t full. A full cloud storage quota is one of the most common silent causes — check your account’s storage usage against its limit.
- Check the account is still properly signed in. An expired password, a security lock, or a signed-out account can all silently stop backup without necessarily removing the app itself.
- Check your internet and battery-saving settings. Some phones restrict background app activity to save battery, which can quietly prevent backup from running unless the app is open or specifically excluded from those restrictions.
Check recent photos are actually backed up
Take a new test photo, wait a reasonable amount of time on Wi-Fi, then check whether it appears in your cloud backup. If it does, backup is working again; if not, you’ve confirmed there’s still a problem to fix.
If backup has stopped and you don’t know why
If you’ve checked storage, sign-in and battery settings and it’s still not backing up, try removing and re-adding the account, or reinstalling the backup app, which resolves many otherwise unexplained stalls.
Next step
Once backup is confirmed working again, it’s worth periodically checking it can actually restore, not just upload — see Restore photos from an Android phone’s backup and check it worked.
