If your photos were backing up to the cloud, a dead phone doesn’t mean lost photos — you can usually access them from any other device by signing into the same account, without touching the phone itself.
What you need
- The account your phone was backing up to (Google, Apple, or similar)
- Another device: a computer, tablet, or different phone
- Patience if the phone genuinely can’t be recovered and you need to rely on the backup alone
What your chances depend on
Whether this is straightforward depends entirely on whether backup was switched on and had finished recently before the phone died. If it hadn’t, some recent photos may not have made it to the cloud copy.
How to try to recover the photos
- Try the basics first, briefly. A phone that won’t turn on sometimes just needs charging for 15-30 minutes on a known-working charger and cable, or a forced restart (check the button combination for your specific model).
- If it still won’t turn on, check your cloud backup from another device. On a computer or another phone, sign into the account (photos.google.com for Google Photos, or icloud.com for iCloud) and see how recent the most recent backed-up photo is.
- Download anything you need from that backup. Use the service’s download or export option to save copies of the photos you need onto your new or working device.
- For photos that never made it to the cloud, consider professional data recovery. If the phone holds genuinely irreplaceable photos that weren’t backed up, a phone repair or data-recovery specialist may be able to access the phone’s storage directly, even if the screen or power button has failed — get a quote before committing, as this isn’t guaranteed to work or be cheap.
- Once you’re sorted, set up backup properly on whatever device you use next. See Back up an Android phone’s photos automatically so this is less stressful next time.
Check what you actually got back
You’ll know you’ve recovered what you can when you’ve confirmed the date of the most recent photo in your cloud backup and either accepted that as the cut-off or had a data-recovery specialist assess the phone directly for anything after that date.
If nothing you try gets the phone on
If you’re not sure whether the phone is truly dead or just has a flat battery or a software fault, a phone repair shop can usually tell you quickly and cheaply which situation you’re in before you commit to anything more involved.
Next step
Once you’re back up and running, it’s worth checking your backup covers everything you think it does — see Check your backup covers videos as well as photos.
