Use a clone or content-aware fill tool to rebuild the missing corner from nearby matching areas of the photo, keeping the repair simple and plausible rather than guessing at detail you cannot know.

What you need

  • A scan of the torn photo, saved as a copy
  • Photoshop Elements (Content-Aware Fill or Clone Stamp)
  • 20 to 30 minutes

What kind of tear this fixes

A torn corner that took out plain background (like sky or a wall) is a safe, straightforward repair. A torn corner that took out part of a person’s face or a unique object is different — there, any fill is a guess, and it is worth being upfront with family that a repaired area is a best guess, not a recovered fact.

How to repair the torn corner

  1. Scan or photograph the torn photo as flat as possible, so the repair tool has good detail to work with.
  2. Open the scan in Photoshop Elements and select the torn corner using the Lasso or Rectangle tool, extending slightly into the surrounding good area.
  3. Choose Edit, then Fill Layer, and select Content-Aware from the options — Elements will attempt to fill the selection using patterns from the rest of the photo.
  4. Check the result. If it looks odd or repeats an obvious pattern, undo and try the Clone Stamp tool instead: hold Alt/Option, click a similar area nearby to set your source, then paint over the torn section.
  5. Blend the edges of your repair with the Spot Healing Brush at a small size, so the join between original and repaired area is not obvious.
  6. Zoom out and check the whole photo looks balanced, then save the repaired version under a new file name.

Check the repair blends in

View the photo at normal size from a short distance — a good repair should be hard to spot without knowing it is there. Zoom in only on the repaired area to check for repeated patterns or obvious blur, which are signs the fill needs more work.

If the tear crosses a face

If Content-Aware Fill produces a strange result, it usually means the surrounding area did not have enough matching detail for it to copy from — the Clone Stamp approach gives you more manual control in these cases. If the torn area covered part of a face or important object, consider leaving the tear visible rather than inventing what might have been there.

Next step

Fix a photo scanned at an angle is a good next step if the same photo also needs straightening.
