Use a light touch with a healing or spot-removal tool on individual marks, rather than a blanket smoothing filter over the whole face, so skin keeps its natural texture.

What you need

  • The photo you want to retouch, saved as a copy
  • Photoshop Elements (Spot Healing Brush) or Google Photos/Apple Photos’ built-in touch-up tool
  • 10 to 20 minutes

Why whole-face smoothing goes wrong

A whole-face smoothing filter is the fast option, but it blurs texture as well as blemishes, which is what makes over-retouched photos look waxy or fake. Fixing individual spots takes longer but keeps the photo looking like a real person.

How to retouch without over-smoothing

  1. Open your copy of the photo and zoom in to about 100% on the face.
  2. In Photoshop Elements, select the Spot Healing Brush from the tools panel, and set its brush size just a little larger than the mark you want to remove.
  3. Click directly on each blemish, scratch or spot on the skin one at a time — the tool blends it with the surrounding texture automatically.
  4. Zoom out occasionally to check the face still looks natural overall, not just clean up close.
  5. If using Google Photos or Apple Photos on a phone, use their spot-fix or healing tool the same way — tap directly on the mark rather than dragging over a large area.
  6. Avoid any smooth-skin or soft-focus filter for the whole photo — these are the ones that flatten texture across the entire face.

Check the skin still looks real

Step back from the screen, or view the photo at a normal viewing size rather than zoomed in — skin should still show some natural texture, like faint lines or pores, rather than looking like a plastic doll.

If a fix leaves an obvious smudge

If a spot-healing click leaves an obvious smudge, undo it (Ctrl/Cmd+Z) and try clicking with a slightly smaller brush, or click a few times in small dabs rather than one big click. If the face still looks too smooth afterwards, you may have used a whole-face filter by mistake — undo back to before you applied it and use the spot tool instead.

Next step

Soften heavy AI restoration so a face still looks right covers a related problem, when an AI tool rather than a manual filter has done the over-smoothing.
