Compare Elements and ON1 using the same copied photograph and one modest restoration goal. Choose only after checking the saved result and the access required to make it.
I have not tested them side by side. This guide helps you investigate the choice; it does not declare which restores faces more accurately.
Start with the change you actually need
A faded print, a scratch and an indistinct face are different problems. Write down the one you want to address first.
Try a basic brightness or contrast adjustment as a comparison. The stronger AI effect is useful only if it adds something worth keeping.
Keep the untouched scan. If a damaged original print needs a safer capture, solve that separately rather than expecting an editor to invent reliable missing information.
Check the exact product
Adobe documents Restore Photo in Photoshop Elements. ON1 identifies Restore AI with Photo RAW MAX 2026.5.
Do not assume a similarly named edition includes the demonstrated tool. Record the full version and match the maker’s help to it.
Check your computer against current requirements before starting a trial. Include a representative large scan if that is the work you expect to do.
Understand access and photo handling
Elements’ current Editor licence ends after three years. ON1’s perpetual MAX restoration offer includes one year of cloud processing; its eligible subscriptions have different access terms.
The application licence and the restoration service are therefore separate questions. Confirm what remains usable after each included period.
ON1’s restoration uses cloud processing, so the photo leaves your device. Use a harmless practice image first and read the selected feature’s handling information before uploading sensitive material.
Check each feature’s current account, connection and payment needs. Do not assume all AI tools use the same credits or processing method.
Compare three versions
Keep the original scan, a modest ordinary edit and one restoration candidate. Give each a name that makes the relationship clear.
First view them at the size you plan to use. Ask whether the change helps the photograph, rather than only whether it looks more dramatic.
Then inspect the changed areas closely. Look at expressions, eyes, teeth, hands, clothing edges and lettering. Check nearby details as well as the main face.
AI may produce plausible detail that the scan did not contain clearly. A convincing result does not prove that a person or object originally looked that way.
Finish with the file you can keep
Save the accepted result outside the editor and open that exact file. Check the crop, dimensions and important details again.
A trial preview alone is not enough. Find out whether its useful saving option is included before treating it as a completed result.
Label substantial changes when sharing as family history. A short note such as “AI-restored interpretation; original scan retained” helps the explanation travel.
Reject the candidate if it changes a familiar expression or invents meaningful detail. Keeping the original or simple edit is a successful decision too.
Make a bounded choice
Write what worked, what failed and what remains unchecked. Include the actual Australian cost and the time needed to repeat the job.
Do not process a whole album because one preview looks promising. Finish a small checked group before deciding whether another application belongs in your routine.
Next step
Check how AI restoration can change a familiar face.
