Read which storage is full before removing photographs. Phone storage is space inside the device; cloud storage is space in an online account. Solving one shortage does not automatically solve the other.
A storage warning does not mean your first job is to delete family pictures. Replaceable downloads may be a simpler place to begin.
Two places that can fill up
Your phone has a fixed physical capacity used by apps, photos, video and other content. Buying more cloud space does not enlarge that hardware.
A cloud account has its own allowance. If it is full, new uploads may stop even when the phone has room. Deleting a downloaded television programme from the phone will not increase the cloud allowance.
Write down the warning’s exact wording and where it appeared. Close an unfamiliar cleaner’s offer and check the phone or service directly.
Find the relevant reading
On an iPhone, Settings > General > iPhone Storage shows the device view. Settings > your name > iCloud shows the iCloud view. These are separate readings.
On Android, look in the phone maker’s Storage settings for device use. Google Photos’ account menu provides the starting point for its account and backup status. The precise device-settings layout varies, so do not borrow an iPhone path for an Android phone.
Note the used and available amounts where shown. You can compare the same reading after making one deliberate change.
Photos may not be the main problem
Look at the largest categories. A downloaded film or an unused game may occupy more space than you expected.
Read the relevant app’s removal description before acting. Removing a download, offloading an app and deleting an app’s data are not necessarily the same thing.
Choose a modest goal, such as enough working room for an update or tomorrow’s photographs. There is no need to remove half the collection to make the chart look tidy.
Check where important photos really are
A thumbnail on the phone can represent local material or a cloud item. Confirm the intended account and whether uploads have finished before considering local-photo removal.
Open a recent photo, an older favourite and a video through the service’s website or another device. Play the video beyond the first frame. This sample helps check access, but cannot certify every item in a large collection.
Keep an independent checked copy of important photographs too. A synchronised library is not isolated from all changes, including deletion. Include edits, captions and motion where they matter to you.
Choose the route for your actual setup
For an existing iCloud Photos user, Optimise iPhone Storage can manage smaller device versions while full-resolution material remains in iCloud. It is not a promise of an immediate amount of free space.
Google Photos on Android has Free up space on this device for removing backed-up local copies. It is different from deleting items to reduce Google Account storage, and removed local pictures may no longer work offline or appear in the built-in gallery.
Do not apply that Android route to an iPhone using both Google Photos and iCloud Photos. Two services managing the device library need separate consideration.
One change, then a check
After your chosen action, compare the same storage reading and reopen your sample photos. Check offline availability separately if you need it for travel.
If uploads are pending or the confirmation describes something different, pause. Do not empty a bin or try another cleaner to force a better number.
Next step
Check your independent photo backup before substantial photo cleanup.
